South Africa is currently experiencing a skills shortage due to a number of factors including:
* Higher than expected economic growth rates (5-6% per year at present);
* A large number of private and state investment initiatives including infrastructure upgrades to the ports, roads, railways, transport systems, World Cup 2010 requirements, Mining, IT, Biotechnology and other initiatives;
* International skills migration trends which are impact on the whole world;

The Quota List is publish annually by the Department Of Home Affairs, and provides a selection of professionals which have been assessed to be is short supply at that time. The list is not exhaustive and does not exclude any other professionals from applying for any position through other permit routes.
